Champions League 2019/20 favourites
Too many of Europe's elite clubs crumbled in the 2018/19
Champions League, in which Liverpool ended as champions.
But the new season is here and the big names are ready to
bounce back and fight for the trophy. With the draw coming this
Thursday, MARCA have looked at the ten favourites to be
crowned champions in Istanbul.
Real Madrid
They fell to Ajax last time but they had won four of the
previous five on offer. Now they've reinforced by bringing in
Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao,
with Paul Pogba still being pursued. Madrid will be desperate
to assert their dominance over European football again.
Barcelona
Last season it was their main objective and they looked good
to go all the way until a semi-final second leg collapse at
Anfield. Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong have already
come in, not to mention that Neymar could yet return.
Atletico Madrid
They missed the chance to win the Champions League at
home last year and they've had a summer of transition. It's
early still, but the new signings look to have settled already
and Diego Simeone will be keen to go far in Europe.
Manchester City
It's the only thing Pep Guardiola hasn't won since moving to
England, and he's struggled to conquer Europe since leaving
Barcelona. Players have arrived, notably Rodrigo Hernandez
and Joao Cancelo, and they'll fancy their chances.
Liverpool
The champions didn't do much this summer as Jurgen Klopp
opted to work with what he had and they'll want that
continuity to prove beneficial on the pitch. Up top, Mohamed
Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will cause problems
for anyone.
Tottenham
They surprised many by reaching last year's final where they
were unlucky to lose. A handful have come in, but there's still
uncertainty surrounding Christian Eriksen. Challenging on
multiple fronts won't be easy.
Juventus
Cristiano Ronaldo alone is enough to suggest they're
contenders. Add the signings of Matthijs de Ligt, Aaron
Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot and you have a very strong team
again this season.
PSG
Neymar will likely leave, but Kylian Mbappe and Edinson
Cavani can carry a load in attack. With Ander Herrera joining
their midfield, they'll back themselves to go far.
Bayern Munich
A new era has begun in Bavaria. Franck Ribery and Arjen
Robben are gone, but Ivan Perisic and Philippe Coutinho have
come in to carry the load. At the back, they've added Lucas
Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard.
Borussia Dortmund
They put Bayern on the ropes in the Bundesliga last season
and they've kept their core. Thorgan Hazard is one of the
arrivals as they'll be keen to surprise many.
